Inspired by Madalene Hill
Madalene Hill’s dream of showcasing the world’s medicinal plants began in 1998, with Sally Isenberg and Tony Scanapico co-chairing the project. Sponsored by the McAshan family and over 200 contributors and volunteers, the garden came to life and was dedicated in 2001. Ceramic artist, Pat Johnson, of Fayetteville created the mural tile art at its entrance. Madalene Hill continued to work tirelessly in these gardens, sharing her immense knowledge of botany, folklore, and humor with all who came to visit.
Today, the Pioneer Unit continues the care and management of the Pharmacy Garden at Festival Hill in Round Top, Texas. It is a wonderful place to smell, touch, and learn about the herbs that have shaped civilizations and their medicines.
Our members are currently researching the plants of the Pharmacy Garden to bring historical and modern information about the plants you are viewing to your fingertips, it is a work in progress, and we hope you enjoy your time in the gardens.
